Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex yet gratifying procedures in the field of the facial plastic surgery. There are many inexperienced cosmetic surgeons who may offer this procedure as a low price deal to any one who walks in to their clinic. However, it is important for a patient to understand whether or not he or she is a good candidate for rhinoplasty rather than getting a good deal with poor results. We often ask our patients to do some initial research about different type of rhinoplasties, and reading about risk and benefits of the procedure on our website. In addition, we encourage them to check out the before and after rhinoplasty pictures on our website. When a patient comes to the consultation prepared, it is typically a far more productive session that results in a better understanding of the procedure and options available. During your consultation with Dr. Kevin Sadati, one of the Orange County’s renowned rhinoplasty surgeons, you will discuss your goals and hopes for a rhinoplasty procedure and he will discuss your options. After a complete history and physical exam, he will help you to understand whether you’re a good candidate for cosmetic or functional rhinoplasty.
Typically, the first complimentary consultation lasts about 30 minutes long. The patient is given ample time to explain their own concerns and misgivings regarding their nose, and the doctor can then assess and respond to the patient with a plan of action. It is extremely important that the patient provides the doctor with a detailed history and medical background, as well as a psychological assessment. These are key factors in determining a patient’s candidacy for rhinoplasty. Also at the consultation an expert nose plastic surgeon will note other factors that might impact the surgery, including thickness of the skin, how much oil is present in the skin, the length of the nose and any previous surgeries.
It is important to us that our patients are mentally ready for this procedure as well. We must understand the patients motives, as well as determine if the patient has realistic expectations from a rhinoplasty procedure. The initial consultation will identify any risks, as well as discuss the procedure that will take place and what realistic results can be expected by the patient. Computer imaging is available to simulate what nasal shape is expected after surgery. Photographs are taken of each patient at the consultation to help with analysis, and then can be used as comparisons once the procedure is complete. Patients are encouraged to write down any questions they might have following the initial consultation and get them answered before setting up a pre-operative appointment, which is considered the second consultation. This is an important step in the process, as we want our patients to be well informed and prepared before heading into surgery. Well informed patient who follow instructions of an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon are generally happy with their surgical results.
